Celebrate Māori Language Week

Tuesday, Sep 4, 2018, by Sheryl Blythen

It’s Māori Language Week from September 10 to 16, and workplaces are encouraged to take part this year.

The theme is Kia Kaha te Reo Māori, which means let’s make the Māori language strong.

The Māori Language Commission is encouraging organisations and businesses to take part in special parades to commemorate the week in Auckland, Gisborne, Rotorua and Wellington.

It also has free downloadable resources for workplaces, including posters and phrase booklets covering all situations, including workplaces.

Here are a few words and phrases you might be able to start using conversations or emails.

Kia pai mai! – That’s really good

Waea mai – Ring me

Me mutu pea i konei – Enough said

He tika tāu – You’re right

Noho ora mai rā i roto i ngā manaakitanga katoa – Look after yourself, may you remain well

Aku mihi nui ki a koe – Many thanks

Tino – I agree

Mō taku hē - Apologies

Nāku, nā – Yours faithfully

Nāku noa, nā – Yours sincerely

Rorohiko – computer

Papa pātuhi - keyboard
