Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week) kicks off on Saturday, 14 September and runs until 21 September.
The theme this year is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’, chosen to represent the resilience, adaptability and endurance of the language and reflect the commitment New Zealanders have made to embracing and learning te reo Māori long into the future.
Workplaces across Aotearoa are planning their celebrations for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori and there are loads of online resources to help make the commemorations fun for everyone.
Start by heading to the bi-culturalism page in our online Resource Library, which has a great guide on introducing and embracing te reo Māori in the workplace.
It also has links to several websites where you can download resources on using te reo Māori in the office plus terms and words to use in hui.
There are even more resources available at reomaori.co.nz – you can download a guide on how to run your own event for Te Wiki o te Reo Māori, get posters for the office, language cards, desktop and Teams backgrounds, email signatures and profile pictures.
Māori Language Week celebrates the presentation of the Māori Language Petition to parliament on 14 September 1972. It has been marked every year since 1975.
This year, all of Aotearoa is invited to stop what they’re doing and celebrate te reo Māori at 12pm on 14 September.
It’s the perfect opportunity to take a moment for te reo Māori as we acknowledge the past, celebrate the present, and prepare for the future.
