Real Journeys – Wisdom Workers cruise to success

The cultural challenge

Staff feedback indicated frustration from younger employees looking to progress their careers and, at the same time, the company needed to manage the retirement of its aging launch masters so it was not facing a significant skills shortage.

Strategies for success
  • Real Journeys set itself up as a NZQA-accredited qualifications provider, becoming the biggest maritime training employer behind the Navy.
  • The company used the knowledge of its wisdom workers to help develop a supporting workbook for the qualification.
  • The workbook is used as a tool for training that was already incurring informally, ensuring consistent standards across Real Journeys diverse and remote locations.
  • Opportunities were created for wisdom workers to have one-on-one sessions with employees in training to reinforce the learning and encourage and support their efforts.
Results and benefits
  • More than 250 employees have completed crew qualifications under the new scheme.
  • Two new fully-customised maritime qualifications are available to employees as a next step in progression.
  • Six employees have been identified as future launch masters and are undertaking a Skipper Restricted Limits course, which is being co-facilitated by wisdom workers.
  • Six Real Journeys wisdom workers are now NZQA-qualified workplace assessors, and two have gained accreditation as Maritime New Zealand examiners.
  • More about Real Journeys
