Get sign language savvy in your workplace

Monday, May 7, 2018, by Sheryl Blythen

It’s New Zealand Sign Language Week from May 7 to May 13 and your organisation can help celebrate one of our country’s official languages.

One of the easiest ways to take part, and promote diversity in the workplace, is to download the 25 Signs To Learn at Work leaflet and encourage your colleagues to begin using a few simple signs.

This is just one of a series of I Am Deaf, Let’s Talk publications that cover signs for work, home and family, medical situations, weekend activities and Māori concepts.

Free 45-minute sign language taster classes are being held around the country throughout May – some regions still have capacity in the classes aimed at organisations. Or you can join the NZSL Week Leaders Challenge, which is spearheaded by Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern. Leaders in business and other fields have been challenged to learn and sign a brief video message to show their support for NZSL Week. The videos will be uploaded here during the week.
