Five ways to retain your Millennial talent

With Millennials comprising 34 per cent of the global workforce, a figure that’s expected to rise to 50 per cent by the year 2020, organisations need to know how to motivate and retain the youngest generation in the workplace. Here are our top five tips for ensuring your Millennial talent believe they are able to do their best work and are committed to supporting your strategic goals.

  • Trust your Millennials to get the job done. Be flexible in how, when and where employees can get their work done – flexible work hours or remote working should not be just for those with carer responsibilities or senior staff.
  • Be a good corporate citizen – have strong sustainability and corporate social responsibility initiatives, and make sure Millennials understand how their work is having a positive impact on your clients, your community and the world at large.
  • Create opportunities for mentoring and reverse mentoring – allow all generations to learn from each other in the workplace – and give Millennials regular feedback on how they are going.
  • Be open to change. Don’t insist on doing things the way they have always been done – finding shortcuts is something Millennials think should be encouraged, not frowned upon.
  • Build a strong relationship – this is paramount to getting the best out of all staff, but especially Millennials. Connection is key.
