Recent research findings have raised questions around whether organisations are doing enough to hold senior leaders responsible for progress in diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) kaupapa.
The 2023 New Zealand Workplace Diversity Survey asked respondents about how senior leaders in their organisation are scrutinised and held formally accountable for their commitment to DEI.
Slightly more than a third (36 per cent) reported that DEI is included within job descriptions of senior leaders, 28 per cent said DEI outcomes are included in leaders’ appraisals and only 20 per cent reported DEI capabilities are looked at as part of the recruitment process for senior leaders.
When asked about strategic responsibility for this mahi, only 16 per cent of respondents indicated that leaders are responsible for strategic DEI targets or KPIs.
Is lack of accountability at a senior level imepeding DEI progress in your workplace? If yes, how do we do this more effectively? And if not by holding leaders accountable, how else might we make progress?
